PONDERINGS
World Peace

If you children were to devise a plan for world-peace, would we listen? Would
we feel you to be naive for wanting us all to just come out and play? Could
we understand that your wish, for the world to simply join hands and sing a
song, is all that we need to do?

Perhaps it is us that do not understand your brilliance? For in waiting for a
better plan or another savior, we forget that the kiss of God is freshest
upon the lips of a child and the embrace of The Most High is a remembrance,
warm and alive within their souls. "

Only light can dissipate darkness
" Terror is in the human heart. We must remove this from the heart.
Destroying the human heart, both physically and psychologically, is what we
should avoid. The root of terrorism is misunderstanding, hatred and violence.
This root cannot be located by the military. Bombs and missiles cannot reach
it, let alone destroy it. Only with the practice of calming and looking
deeply can our insight reveal and identify this root. Only with the practice
of deep listening and compassion can it be transformed and removed. Darkness
cannot be dissipated with more darkness. More darkness will only make
darkness thicker. Only light can dissipate darkness. Those of us who have the
light should display the light and offer it so that the world will not sink
into total darkness."

tragedy

Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can.
"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.  Instead of diminishing
evil, it multiplies it.  Through violence you may murder the liar, but you
cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.  Through violence you may
murder the hater, but you do not murder hate.  In fact, violence merely
increases hate. So it goes.  Returning violence for violence multiplies
violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of
stars.  Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.  Hate
cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."
- Martin Luther King

Peaceful methods are a valid alternative to violence
The last century was marred by conflict and war.  Let us take steps to ensure
that this new century will be characterized instead by non-violence and
dialogue, the preconditions of peaceful co-existence. It is natural that in
any human society there will be differences and conflicts, but we have to
develop confidence that dialogue and other peaceful methods are a valid
alternative to violence in all our relations.  If we take the differences
between us as grounds for fighting and argument, there will be no end to it.
All of us will be weakened and diminished."
--Dalai Lama
