Excerpts from the Last Sermon of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

The following quotes are excerpts from the last sermon of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He delivered this sermon during his last pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj), only months before he passed away in 632 AD (10 AH).

“Beware of Satan for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

The Rulers are people's trustees, not their masters !

by Murtadha Mutahhari

In the last chapter, we said that a dangerous and misleading view became current in the thought of some modern European thinkers interlinking in an unnatural fashion the belief in God on the one hand and negation of peoples rights on the other. This correlation played a significant role in inducing a group to incline towards materialism. Duty and responsibility to God was assumed to necessarily negate the duty and responsibility to the people. Divine obligations completely displaced human obligations. The belief and faith in God (Who, according to the Islamic teachings, created the universe on the principles of truth and justice) was considered to conflict with and contradict the belief in innate and natural human rights, instead of being regarded as their basis. Naturally, belief in the right of people's sovereignty was equated with atheism.                                                                                              More.....

Getting Serious About Boy-Girl Relationships in Islam

My very dear young Muslim brothers and sisters I have something of extreme importance to talk to you about. I want to tell you some things about boy-girl relationships, sex and marriage. I know these are very personal and delicate matters for discussion, but given how essential they are to your life, to the whole Muslim Ummah, and to the future of Islam as our way of life these are matters we must discuss. In Islam it has been made very clear as to what is acceptable and what is not acceptable between males and females who are not married to each other, so if all was going well in this critical area of life I wouldn't need to say anything; but, all is not going well. Please know what I am going to say to you I say only because I love Islam and I care so very much about the future safety, happiness, and success in the lives of all of you although we may have never met.

Justice Should not be Compromised:

Favoritism, nepotism, partiality and shutting up of mouths by big morsels, have always been the essential tools of politicians. Now a man had assumed power and captained the ship of the caliphate who profoundly detested these things. In fact his main objective was to struggle and fight against this kind of politics. Naturally, with the very inception of 'Ali's reign, the politicians with their hopes and expectations were disappointed.

Honolulu Statement for the Common Good

Globalization for the Common Good: An Interfaith Perspective - Fifth Annual Conference

“The Quest for Identity, Justice, and Peace”
June 21-25 • Chaminade University • Honolulu, Hawaii   /
 Honolulu Statement (2006)

We came to this beautiful land of aloha, a place of harmony between sky, mountains, streams, and ocean. The land itself taught us gratitude and it is with humility that we give gratitude back to the land and people of Hawai’i. As we come now to the end of our stay, we challenge each other and all people of good will to stand together with Hawaiians as they work out their own story of identity and the renaissance of their culture. Theirs is an important lesson of travail and triumph in our global community.                 More.....

U.S. Muslims Confront Taboo on Nursing Homes
By LYNETTE CLEMETSON

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — As a founder of the growing Shiite Muslim community here, Hussein Walji oversaw the building of the area's first mosque. He directed construction of its youth center, and followers hailed him as a visionary for adding an auditorium for ecumenical functions like the M&M picnic for Muslims and Methodists.

But even family members find Mr. Walji's latest expansion uncomfortably American: he is developing plans for an assisted living and nursing complex in this Minneapolis suburb.      More.....

The Three-Step Path to Islamic Reality
by Dr. Robert Dickson Crane

A principal concern that many people have about the nature, purpose, and policies of organizational or institutionalized Islam is that the organizers may focus on controlling the world on behalf of justice, and then end up pursuing their own power.  Indeed, justice is a framework for social life in Islamic thought, but controlling the world on behalf of justice or anything else is not.  The only thing we can control is our individual selves in order to liberate ourselves from selfishness and thereby to commit ourselves to selfless pursuit of peace and prosperity through justice.
