Article  8   Seeing with Muslim Eyes by  HAMZA YUSUF

( excerpt from The Empire and the Crescent,
Global Implications For a New American Century)

How many a dispute could have been deflated into a single paragraph if the disputants had dared to define their terms. --- Aristotle.

THE MYSTIC POET, Rumi, tells of three foreigners traveling down a road together. They come across a drachma on the road, and picking it up together, each declares what he wishes to do with it. The first says he will buy `inab, which is Arabic for grapes; the second, a Persian, says, "No! We must buy anger;' Farsi for grapes. The third, a Roman, exclaims it must be vitis? Latin for grapes. They begin to fight, and soon a journey distinguished by camaraderie descends into a fisticuff of animosity. Rumi remarks that all they needed was a translator to explain that they all really wanted the same thing.

Article 11   The Origins of the Sunni/Shia Split in Islam

by Hussein Abdulwaheed Amin,

Editor of  IslamForToday.com

Introduction....
The Shia shahadah (declaration of faith) states:
"There is no god but Alláh, Muhammad is the Messenger of Alláh, Alí is the Friend of Alláh, the Successor of the Messenger of Alláh And his first Caliph."
If you are already familiar with standard Sunni beliefs, you will immediately notice the addition to the shahadah regarding Imam Ali (ra), cousin of the Prophet (pbuh), husband of his daughter Fatima, father of Hassan and Hussein and the second person ever to embrace Islam. The term Shia or Shi'ite derives from a shortening of Shiat Ali or partisans of Ali.

Article 12   THE DOCTRINE OF INFALLIBILITY IN THE Shi'i TRADITION

There is great deal of misconception about the doctrine of 'ismah  (infallibility) and its precise meaning among the Isma'ilis, in general, and among the  Dawoodi Bohras, in particular. The doctrine of 'ismah i.e. infallibility applies  only to the Prophet in Sunni Islam and to the Prophet, his legatee (wasi) and  imams in the Shi'ah Islam.

Article 13    Muslims in America: Seven Centuries of History

The New York Times estimates (Feb. 21, 1989) that there are approximately 7  million Muslim in America. The Chicago Tribune puts the number at 16 million.
Other estimates put the number at around ten million, and the number is to  double by the year 2027. The reason for the discrepancy is that the Census  Bureau  does not ask for religious affiliation and the 3000 mosque membership rosters  do not accurately represent all the Muslims in the USA.

Article 14   When have I become less by dying ?

by Rumi
O my noble friends, slaughter this cow,
if you wish to raise up the spirit of insight.
I died to being mineral and growth began.
I died to vegetable growth and attained to the state
of animals.
I died from animosity and became Adam:
why then should I fear?

Article 15    Tsunami  by William Rees-Mogg

" ....The tsunami mocks this pride. Perhaps our modern skyscrapers would withstand, as some tall hotels have withstood, the rush of the water.
But our global system has an arrogance that challenges the forces of nature. It is as though mankind had decided to tweak nature by the nose to show who is the boss. The tsunami has demonstrated that nature, and not mankind, is still the real master. "
